FIFA 23: Ultimate Team, licenses, cross-play … update on news and big rumors

Expected for the end of September, FIFA 23 will be the last to be called this before the transition to EA Sports FC. Although very little information has been released at this time, several sources agree on the new content and new features to come.

It’s been confirmed for some time: FIFA 23 will be the last FIFA. After this, you will have to get used to talking about EA Sports FC, the new name chosen by Electronic Arts after its decision not to renew the license with Fifa.

As every year, the flagship football video game, which continues to dominate sales in the industry, should be available in the last week of September on PlayStation, Xbox and PC. Also, early access should be granted to owners of the most expensive version of the game and subscribers to the EA Play service. In the meantime, many rumors and some proven information are circulating here and there on the web. Just over three months before the release, RMC Sport takes stock of the latest echoes.

· Major work on Ultimate Team

Two major upheavals are expected for EA’s goose, namely the Ultimate Team mode. On the one hand, it should no longer be possible to modify the positions of players with dedicated cards. Each player would now have a main position and another secondary, in an immutable way. History of no longer seeing N’Golo Kanté in attack.

On the other hand, the system of “chemistry”, which required to align players with common points (championship, nationality, club), should be completely reviewed. There should no longer be green or red links between players. The new device would work with a limit of stars (three) not to be exceeded. This would open up the possibilities for concocting an eleven.

New Icon cards, to pay homage to the “greatest of all time”, are mentioned. Last I heard, we should count on: Harry Kewell, Zico, Gabriel Batistuta, Yaya Touré, Rafael Marquez, Claudio Marchisio, Diego Forlan, Diego Simeone, Dirk Kuyt, Joan Capdevilla, John Arne Riise, Lucio, Park Ji-Sung and Peter Crouch.

Little info on the career mode

For now, the main rumor for other game modes is Solo Career, with new customization options and a stadium editor with advanced features (to change the appearance of the enclosure, scoreboards and capacity).

Towards a return of Juve and the addition of women’s championships

Renamed Piemonte Calcio for a rights issue, Juventus will apparently make a comeback with its real name, its real logo, its real shirts. On the other hand, it is over for the clubs of J-League (Japan) and Liga MX (Mexico). Both championships are now a competitor exclusive eFootball from Konami. Some players such as Florian Thauvin or André-Pierre Gignac could still be present, if EA Sports decides to create fictitious teams.

Women’s championships could be added, according to several sources: the FA Women’s Super League (England), the Frauen-Bundesliga (Germany), the National Women’s Soccer League (United States), D1 Arkema (France). Since 2015, FIFA had contented itself with adding several female selections and introducing the possibility of playing as a footballer in the Club Pro mode.

The 2022 Men’s World Cup will be there, as confirmed by Electronic Arts. All qualified nations will therefore be playable.

The arrival of cross-play seems acquired

This potential novelty is undoubtedly the most important. FIFA 23, in part or in whole, could be “cross-play”. That is, a PlayStation 5 player will be able to play an online match against an Xbox Series player (or even an Xbox One player against an Xbox Series player, which is not not even possible today).

Tests have already been carried out on FIFA 22. If this is confirmed for FIFA 23 (well-informed sources speak in the affirmative), no longer need, for example, to consult with friends to buy the same console. In these times of tensions on the stocks of the new generation consoles, it is a godsend.

It remains to be seen whether the EA Sports project concerns only classic matches, between friends or strangers, or whether cross-play is also envisaged for Ultimate Team and Club Pro. For Ultimate Team, the lucrative card market would therefore become unique. This will further boost transactions.
