Its origins date back to 2018 when a new Dragon Quest Monsters game was announced, Dragon Quest Treasures was revealed in 2021 during the Dragon Quest 35th Anniversary Special. Square Enix then presented it briefly last May, promising that new information will be revealed in June. The promise was indeed kept, since during the Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcasenew footage has been unveiled with a worldwide release date: the December 9, 2022. Dragon Quest Treasures will therefore be released on this date in physical and downloadable form, exclusively on nintendo-switch. We now know a little more about the story and the gameplay thanks to this video and the information published by Nintendo and Square Enix:
Dragon Quest Treasures is therefore a new RPG and spin-off with two protagonists: the treasure hunters Erik and her sister Mia of Dragon Quest XI: Fighters of Destiny. Titled Dragon Quest Treasures: Aoki Hitomi to Oozora no Rashinban (which can be translated into English as Blue Eyes and the Compass of the Skies). Akira Toriyama is back to character design, in a style approaching chibi. The producer is taichi Inuzuka. Dragon Quest Treasures is not a Dragon Quest Monsters but a brand new spin-off. However, the videos, information and images prove that Erik and Mia will be the protagonists of this adventure… just like for the Dragon Quest Monsters announced in 2018. They are also represented with the same illustrations. Speaking of Dragon Quest Monsters, a real new episode of this spin-off series would also be planned.
This game will focus on the search for treasures by embodying Erik and Mia in their youth alongside different monsters from the series. We will also meet new characters. Also, while it will be an RPG, it won’t be traditional at all.. Erik and his sister Mia live on a Viking longship, and dream of the day when they can finally explore the world in search of great treasure. One night, they meet two creatures from elsewhere, Porcellus and Persianawhich transports them to a mysterious world called Draconia. It is an ideal place for the protagonists, since it is full of treasures, as if it had been made for them. A real dream come true.
Draconia is such a huge land that Erik and Mia won’t be able to explore it alone. They will therefore have to call on various well-known creatures from the series (and certainly several new ones, specific to the game) all dubbed (without it being known for the moment if we will have the choice between English and Japanese voices), who can therefore be recruited to form a large team of monsters.
In addition to their treasure finder, Erik and Mia will be able to use a special ability that all monsters have: magic vision, and the ability to detect hidden treasures. In addition to that, they will be able to use them as mounts, which will allow them to explore the different areas of Draconia by climbing cliffs, crossing chasms, hovering in the sky and more, to facilitate access to loot. more difficult to reach.
For example, we can call a slime to jump on it and gain height or cling to a vampivol to fly over the precipices. The monsters can also be used during battles, where Erik and Mia can also participate as in a cooperative action RPG (but playable solo only). You can then go to a base to bring back your loot and have it evaluated. We will discover its value and collect treasures will expand the base and improve the rank of heroes.
Dragon Quest Treasures will be playable in French, English, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. The game is developed in collaboration with Tose, a studio working “in the shadows” for many companies such as Square Enix, Nintendo, Bandai Namco and more for forty years. For Square Enix, Tose worked on the development of Dragon Quest Monsters on game Boy Color, game Boy Advance, DS and 3DS (only the remake of Terry’s Wonderland on 3DS), of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIIIof world of final and Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters. Lately, Tose has helped with the development of Scarlett Nexus, Paper Mario: The Origami King and WarioWare: Get It Together!. On the Nintendo side, in addition to the latest Paper Mario and the latest WarioWare, Tose has worked on thes Game & Watch Gallery, The Legendary Starfy, Fire Emblem Fate, Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir, Super Princess Peach and early Nintendo consoles on the first Famicom Detective Club, Shorts Order, NES Play Action Soccer, Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, Tetris 2 and Kirby’s Block Ball. In total, more than 1,000 games have been developed or co-developed by Tose. But generally, Tose is not credited in the works on which they have the opportunity to work, by the studio’s own will, which always works “behind the scenes” following only the directives of their clients. However, since the redesign of its official site, Tose regularly communicates about its games developed in collaboration with different companies, although not all of them are known. For example, there are no collaboration details for the latest WarioWare.
