Executioner of Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner delivered a very solid performance to play his first quarter-final at Wimbledon. He was joined there by a very applied Novak Djokovic, who knew not to be trapped by Tim van Rijthoven, a few hours after the appearance of Roger Federer on the Center Court. Among the ladies, the brilliant and wonderful story of Tatjana Maria continues.
AND AT THE END… Novak Djokovic wins. The Serb keeps the costume of great pretender to his own succession. Opposed to the hit of the season on grass that is Tim van Rijthoven, the defending champion was of course jostled, just to demonstrate to the (very pleasant) Dutchman that he doesn’t have an XXL track record for nothing, but also to avoid the 11:00 p.m. curfew. At one set everywhere, the unfortunate beaten was able to measure what it means to rub shoulders with Djokovic. We remember this sentence from Andy Roddick: “First Djokovic takes your legs, then he sucks your soul“.
JANNIK WINNER… As imagined, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz fought a very good battle,, who had the merit of taking this meeting head-on while the Spaniard appeared a little “inside” at the start of the game. The 3rd set and its tie-break reached new heights, also carried by an unleashed public. While Alcaraz’s qualities were praised throughout the spring, Sinner (not yet 21) recalled that he too is a superb player. Here he is in the quarter-finals of what is only his second Wimbledon. This while the grass is not necessarily a surface on which it is comfortable.
“DAV MARATHON”… David Goffin has been through some tough times over the past 2 years. So much so that as he approached his 32nd birthday, the Belgian seemed to have moved away from his best moments for good. Except that, coupled with his formidable tenacity, the miracle of Wimbledon has happened and the friendly guy is once again delivering his best tennis. Winner in 3 rounds of Albot then Baez, he then stunned Humbert in 4 sets. Before, yesterday, embarking on a rather fabulous 4:36 marathon to overcome Frances Tiafoe (7-6 5-7 5-7 6-4 7-5), avoiding a super tie-break of all possible. Goffin, who will face Cameron Norrie in the quarterfinals, is a pleasure to see. And as much to be precise: it is the longest match of this Wimbledon 2022.
TIAFOE LAUGHING… “All I can say is fuck David. I really fuck her! He has just beaten me twice in a row in a Grand Slam… Seriously, he’s a great player!” Frances Tiafoe preferred to use humor at the time of the press conference…
HAVEN MARIA! Tatjana Maria never ceases to surprise us and turn her world upside down. The German, mother of 2 children, pushes all the limits. In addition to qualifying for the first time in her career for a Grand Slam quarter-final, the 35-year-old player (WTA 103) is putting in the form. Not happy to have dominated Maria Sakkari on Friday,(5-7 7-5 7-5). Led 4-1 in the 2nd set, then faced with 2 match points for her opponent, Maria did not give up, ending up cutting the grass under the feet of the Latvian. Great!
GERMANY IN STRENGTH… In addition to Tatjana Maria, another German, Jule Niemeier, totally unknown at the start of the tournament, is in the quarter-finals. Both will also face each other, which guarantees their country a place in the last four. Needless to say that the current 97th WTA was absolutely not expected at such a party. Yesterday, she even committed a real crime of lèse-majesté by sweeping the regional stage Heather Watson. Aware of this, Niemeier apologized to the Wimbledon audience. Still, given the (superb) point below, she did not steal her place.
TO REMEMBER… The Maria-Niemeier match will have the distinction of being only the second women’s Wimbledon quarter-final between 2 non-seeded players since 2001. The last time was in 2010 (Kvitova-Kanepi).
DIVINE APPEARANCE… Something like a divine apparition took place on Church Road on Sunday:, who came to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Center Court. The Basel, who has joined many legends of the game, was treated to an ovation, which recalls as much how much he is loved as how near the end of his career is. It is a mixture of eternal respect and heartbreak that now accompanies him every time. “I hope to play here again“, whispered the former “Master”.
THE STARRY WAY… Sure, Tommy Paul (by Norrie) and Tiafoe were knocked out of the tournament yesterday, but with 4 reps in the round of 16, American tennis had equaled its 1999 mark at Wimbledon. And it had been 11 years since “US” tennis had seen so many of its own at this stage of a Grand Slam tournament. It remains to be seen whether Brandon Nakashima (against Kyrgios) and Taylor Fritz (against another Australian, Kubler) can go further…
