New right side of the Valais club, the Vaudois explains why he chose to continue his career at Tourbillon. In a group with potential that has remained too often untapped, will his arrival act as a trigger?

Numa Lavanchy (here in training in Crans-Montana in his new colors) has signed up with FC Sion until June 2025.

When Numa Lavanchy (28) left FC Lugano, winner of the Swiss Cup this spring, to join FC Sion coming out of a new complicated season, many may have been surprised at the choice of destination. But not the main interested party. “I always followed with a curious eye what was going on there, explains Emilio’s dad (18 months). Seen from the outside, I had the impression that every time the little spark was missing, a little something.

Get closer to family

In February 2019, the Vaudois heard the same remarks when he decided to leave Grasshopper to sign south of the Alps. “I was asked what I was going to do there, in a less prestigious club than the Zurich institution,” he recalls. Another element weighed this time in favor of the Valais club. “From the moment I turned down the offer from Lugano, Sion was the only concrete offer I had on the table. And since I didn’t want to take the risk of waiting, I didn’t hesitate. It is also the possibility of getting closer to my family”, explains the new resident of La Tour-de-Peilz.

At Tourbillon, there was often talk of untapped potential and pent-up ambitions. “I would really like to build something like Lugano at FC Sion. You can create something good there. We feel that the public is ready to ignite, that it would take very little to change dimension. When I look at the quality of the contingent, I tell myself that there are no fewer qualities at Tourbillon than at Cornaredo.

“We have everything to be the good surprise of the championship. I believe in it wholeheartedly.”

With his cavalcades on the right flank, Lavanchy, with his 197 matches played in the Super League, will he be the man who will cause the click to last? “I hope in any case to be there when Sion takes off, he exclaims. We have everything to be the good surprise of the championship. I believe in it wholeheartedly.”

At Tourbillon, the desire to work with a reduced contingent, limited to 25 players, testifies this summer to a change in philosophy intended to promote the emergence of a shared line of play, understood by all.

Not out of place

After Lausanne (55 matches), Grasshopper (88 matches) and Lugano (127 matches), Lavanchy is discovering the Valais environment these days. When you arrive in a new team, how do you take your marks? “In Switzerland, by dint of playing against each other all season long, we are used to rubbing shoulders. So I already know a little about everyone, especially Karlen with whom I had played in the different selections. The only ones I didn’t know were those who arrived from abroad (Editor’s note: Ilyas Chouaref/Châteauroux and Denis-Will Poha/Pau) at the same time as me. I did not find myself out of place, the work was pre-chewed.

Like the friendly matches, the first weeks of training are also an opportunity for the Vaudois to take his bearings, to discover the “dynamics of the group” and the functioning of the club on a daily basis. An integration phase which will continue this Saturday in Savièse, during the match between Sion and Dynamo kyiv. Kick-off: 7 p.m. at the Saint-Germain stadium. “I am convinced that here, there is everything to do well…”

Doing well perhaps, surely doing better.
