Lausanne is organizing a weekend of festivities on the sidelines of the arrival of the Tour de France cyclists on July 9. Many activities will invite you to celebrate cycling in all its forms. The City, which expects 60,000 visitors, recommends anticipating its travels.

‘Four years ago, Lausanne submitted an application to host a finish of the Tour de France. We are there, ”rejoiced Emilie Moeschler, municipal sports and cohesion on Wednesday in front of the press in Lausanne.

Seven places will host free entertainment which will begin on Friday July 8 and end on Sunday July 10. ‘We wanted a festive program that brings together the whole population, from children to seniors, by mixing culture, local gastronomy and sporting discoveries’, noted the municipality.

Bastingue in Ouchy

If all the places will have giant screens on which to follow the Tour, each will offer a different program. The Place de la Navigation in Ouchy will notably offer free concerts on three evenings with ABBA For Ever or the comedian singer MC Roger, announced Patrice Schaub, director of the organizing committee.

The public will be able to take part in bicycle repair workshops, test funny bicycles and challenge themselves on the Year of the Bicycle pump track. Giant zumba classes will be offered in the morning on Saturday and Sunday. Some 500 free ice creams will be distributed, he detailed.

Women’s cycling

In terms of sports, Friday evening will see the arrival of the peloton of female cyclists who will have covered all or part of the Dôle – Lausanne stage. The approximately 100 women expected are brought together by the association ‘Donnons des Elles au vélo’ as well as by the City of Lausanne and its ambassador Marjorie de Goumoëns. Registrations are still possible, said Ms. Moeschler.

In the city center, the market is held on Saturdays. The streets will come alive from 10:00 a.m. to the rhythm of orchestras, artists and street performances. In Saint-François, around seventy funny bikes will test the balance of young and old. In Beaulieu, families will be able to enjoy more than 5,000 m2 of outdoor and indoor activities free of charge, including initiations and bicycle workshops for children.

A big battle

Between the Pontaise Olympic Stadium and the finish line, the public will be able to witness the last efforts of the cyclists and experience the thrills of the race and the intensity of a stage finish (Saturday from 5:15 p.m.) up close. ‘It will be a big battle to take the yellow jersey,’ said Mr. Schaub.

And remember that some amateurs will set up on site from 06:00 in the morning so as not to miss anything of the show. Composed of 600 people and 150 vehicles, the Tour caravan will pass from around 3:45 p.m.

Public transport

The City expects to receive a large audience, from all over Switzerland, but also from neighboring countries, Belgium or England. Emilie Moeschler repeated it: major traffic disruptions are planned and public transport is to be preferred.

A 100-space car park is planned in Mex at Bobst. From there, shuttles allow you to reach the LEB and get to the city centre. On the financial side, the City has committed 600,000 francs and the canton 500,000 francs.

The 8th stage of the Tour de France 2022 takes place on July 9 between Dôle and Lausanne, over a distance of 186.3 kilometers. The next day, the cyclists will complete the Aigle (VD) – Châtel (F) journey, i.e. 192.9 km.
